The Optical Communication System (VTI3B3) course in the D3 Telecommunication Technology Study Program, Faculty of Applied Sciences, is included in semester 5 in the current curriculum, namely: curriculum 2020. This course is a compulsory course and is one of the courses that characterizes students and graduates so that they have specific abilities in the field of Telecommunications, especially in the field of Optics in accordance with industry needs.
Optical Communication System is one of the advanced courses in D3 Telecommunication Technology Study Program. This course teaches practical concepts of optical communication systems consisting of Background of optical communication systems as an alternative, light propagation geometric approach and electromagnetic waves, Optical Fiber, Optical Sources as Transmitters, Optical Detectors as receivers, optical signal coupling, Splicing, Connectors, and Couplers, Optical Measurement using FTTH, Optical amplifiers, FTTH network link planning, PON Technology Concept, WDM Technology Concept, Wireless Optical Communication (OWC) Technology Concept, FSO Technology Concept..
This Optical Communication System course provides knowledge of the theory and basis of Optical Communication Systems. This course also provides students with the ability to analyze Optical Communication network systems and skills in using optical devices integrated in one network and optisystem software as a tool.
The Optical Communication System course in this study program has existed since the first time this campus was named Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Telkom (STT Telkom) where at that time there was only an S1 Telecommunication Engineering study program. Along with the change of STT Telkom to Institut Teknologi Telkom (ITTelkom), the Optical Communication System course is also taught in the D3 Telecommunication Technology study program with a total of 3 credits.
The urgency of the Optical Communication System course is that this course is the core course of the D3 Telecommunication Technology study program, where this course is fundamental or basic to be able to understand the whole of Telecommunication Technology, especially in the field of Optical Communication System networks. Optical Communication System together with Communication System is a compulsory course that animates this study program.
The prerequisites for the Optical Communication System course according to the 2020 Curriculum organigram are Electromagnetics, Basic Telecommunication Systems and Communication Systems, while the courses that require prerequisites for Optical Communication Systems are Broadband Switching Techniques.

Broadly speaking, the subject matter of the Optical Communication System Course (DTH2G3) is outlined into 14 subjects for 14 weeks of meetings as follows:
